The Jacaranda trees are blooming, the days are getting longer and for students and school kids across South Africa, this means only one thing: exam time is upon us. While exam time is a difficult time for both learners and parents, we’ve found a way to take the stress out of studying with these three handy study aides that you can make at home.

1. Revision timetable

Making sure that you have enough time to effectively study all of your subjects as well as making time to take a break or two will ensure that when your exams comes, you’ll be refreshed and prepared.

You can find numerous revision timetable templates online, like this one from, or you can create one for yourself using Microsoft Excel.

If your printer has colour printer cartridges, colour-coding your subjects will help you figure out what to study next at a glance.

2. Flashcards

Making your own flashcards means that you can create a range of them that are appropriate for all ages, including the youngest members of your household.

To create your flashcards you’ll need cardboard, glue, scissors and printer ink or toner cartridges. You can either print images onto the front of the cards or you cans tick them on. If you want your cards to last a bit longer, you can also laminate them at home or get them laminated at a print shop.

You can find a handy how to guide to help create your flashcards on Instructables.

3. Notes organisers

Organising your notes ensures that you can keep track of what you’ve studied and what you still have to cover. Keep a file for each subject and use coloured cardboard for each subject. You can create dividers for each topic as well to make organising your notes even easier.

Open up a blank document in Word (if you have a PC) or Pages (if you have a Mac) and create your dividers. Make a cover sheet for the subject and list the topics under that heading. Do the same for each topic, if you want to create dividers for them.

With these study aides, making sure you’re ready for exam day will be a breeze. If you need any help with how to get started, there are also many tutorials on how to manage your time and the most effective ways to study certain subjects available online.
