If you know the hassle of having to switch between printers depending which network you’re on, you’ll know how frustrating it can be to remember to switch between printers wherever you are. Luckily, if you have a Windows PC, there’s a handy little tool to help you set up a default printer on all of the wireless networks you connect to.

For example, say you have a Samsung toner printer at work and an Epson ink printer at home, setting up multiple default printers will ensure that you print to the correct printer on the correct network. And the best part is that you will only need to set this up once.

The following steps will work on all PCs running Windows 8.1, but if you’re using Windows 7 you’ll only have this option available if you’re using Windows 7 Professional, Ultimate or Enterprise.

To set the default printers in Windows 8.1:

- Point your mouse at or swipe in from the lower right corner of the screen and then tap or click on Search. Search for Devices and Printers and click or tap on it.
- Tap or click on any printer in your printer list and then tap or click on Manage Default Printers. At least one of the printers in your printer list should have a green tick next to it, showing that it’s your default printer.
- Select Change My Default Printer When I Change Networks.
- Under Select Network, choose the first network you want to set a printer for.
- Under Select Printer, choose the printer you want to be the default on that network and then tap or click Add.
- When you’re done selecting a printer for each network, tap or click OK.

To set the default printers in Windows 7:

- Open Control Panel and go to Devices and Printers
- Click on any of the printers in your printer list and then click on Manage Default Printers. At least one of the printers in your printer list should have a green tick next to it, showing that it’s your default printer.
- Select Change My Default Printer When I Change Networks.
- Under Select Network, choose the first network you want to set a printer for.
- Under Select Printer, choose the printer you want to be the default on that network and then click Add.
- When you’re done selecting a printer for each network, click OK.

You can add more than two printers as defaults. Please keep in mind that this will only work for network printer and not printers that you’re connected to directly (via USB cable for example).
