In an increasingly mobile world, do we really need printers? Canon seems to think so (and we tend to agree). They recently unveiled their new portable Wi-Fi printer, the Pixma Pro iP110. This little printer offers true portability, it weighs only 2 kg and can easily fit into a laptop bag.

The Canon Pixma Pro iP110 is smartphone and tablet ready, supporting Google Cloud Print, Apple AirPrint and the Canon Pixma Printing Solutions app to make your portable printing experience truly plug and play.

The printer also comes with a rechargeable battery back, to make printing anywhere even easier. While it is quite pricey (about $100 or R1100), not having to hunt for a plug point and the fact that it lasts for anything up to 2 weeks, depending on your printing habits, makes it worth it.

The Pixma Pro iP110 also comes with a host of features, like borderless photo printing, a 50 sheet paper feeder, Auto Image Fix (which will adjust your under- or over-exposed photos automatically) and the ability to handle both glossy and plain paper and envelopes. The printer can take A4, A5 and standard photo paper sizes as well.

The printer comes with Canon’s 5 colour printer ink system and the printhead is built into the cartridges, making them easy to replace. The colour ink cartridges are not separate, as they normally would be in a photo printer, the Canon CLI-36 colour ink cartridge has been designed to save space. This could potentially lead to expensive cartridge replacements if you run out of any one of the colours.

The printer also features a ‘Save Black Ink’ mode which uses the 4 colour inks to create a composite black ink if you’re low on black. This could potentially not be very cost-effective in the long run, but it has been designed to be used as backup plan if you’re not able to get your hands on a replacement cartridge.

The cartridges have a pretty average page yield, the Canon PGI-35 black ink cartridge can print out 191 pages at 5% coverage, while the colour will give you 249 pages.

The iP110 is available with or without the battery for between R3000 and R4000, depending on the vendor.
